Project Update

This is probably one of the most exciting blog posts I have ever written. Scratch that. It is DEFINITELY the most exciting blog post I have ever written.

If you are a regular reader of this blog, you have probably noticed that the countdown on the right side of your screen marking the day until the laptop order is placed has disappeared. And, no, this did not just happen because our expected date of December 31, 2012 has passed (even though it obviously has).

So, even though the original date of shipment was not actually followed, I am very pleased, honored, and excited to announce that as of last Friday, January 11, 2013, the order for the laptops has been placed! The 100 laptops have officially been ordered, and now the only thing we have to do is wait approximately 120 days for them to be manufactured in China before they can actually be shipped to Egypt. In the meantime, don’t worry, there is still a lot more work that I have to do with regard to shipping and customs and curriculum development, so this blog will continue to be up and running!

I also wanted to share some statistics with all of you.

First and foremost, the grand total of money that Laptops for Egypt has raised since its official opening on June 22, 2012 is (approximately, give or take a little bit) $32,000! I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking that $32,000 is actually $7,000 more than I actually had planned to raise in the first place. This is completely true. But with the new costs of shipping, we realized that we needed more money than we had actually projected for. And I am so incredibly blessed and proud to be saying that we have raised $32,000. $32,000! Every time I say it or type it, I cannot hardly believe what I’m saying. Coming from the girl who never expected this project to even leave my brain, I am so proud to say that my dream has come true and that these laptops ARE ACTUALLY GOING TO EGYPT IN JUST A FEW MONTHS. Wow. And I absolutely couldn’t have done it without all the support I have received–emotionally and financially. To those of you who have read my blog, forwarded it to someone you know, have written a check, have supported me emotionally throughout this process, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Laptops for Egypt would not exist had it not been for you.

Some other statistics. Since this blog’s opening in June of 2012, more than 2100 people have looked at this blog! Whether you stumbled across this blog on accident or you know me in person, I cannot tell you how much it means to me that this blog has reached 2100 computer screens. I hope that if you did stumble across this blog on accident that you learned something new about a very needy population in Egypt.

In addition, since this blog’s opening, these 2100 people who have visited my blog come from 72 countries across the world! Yes, 72! India, China, Colombia, the Philippines, Malaysia and UAE to name just a few. It’s amazing how technology allows people thousands upon thousands of miles away to stay connected and informed. It is so encouraging to know that this blog has gone as far as it has.

Now, it’s time to celebrate this exciting news! Thank you all for your help, because whether you know it or not, I am forever indebted to each and every one of you for helping me make my dream come true.

    Dear Sarah,

It goes without saying that when someone like you who is smart, dedicated and passionate about such a philanthropic project, to reap the fruit of her labor ..You have long prayed about this project and worked very hard to keep everyone informed about every little detail, that is why God has blessed your efforts…so Kudos, for an outstanding job , Sarah…You are a great example for many, including me, and I am sure this is not going to be the last project you will undertake …Your kind heart will seek future projects that will satisfy your passion for helping the underprivileged…

    Love,

    Ferial Kheir

    • Thank you so much for your kind words. I literally could not have done any of this without the support of my family, my friends, my teachers, Hands Along the Nile, and even my blog readers all over the world. I cannot wait for the day when I will write a post about how the laptops have finally reached the children of the Zabaleen. Until now, it’s a waiting game for the manufacturing of the computers…

    • Thank you very much for your support! As was stated in our school’s commemoration program for Martin Luther King Jr today, it only takes one person to make a difference. I am just so thankful that I have had as much support as I have had throughout this process.
